About the Course

This comprehensive course on techniques of endoscopic sinus surgery is for both beginner and for the surgeon who has some experience in endoscopic surgery. Through didactic sessions, cadaver dissections and live surgery demonstrations, this course will focus on delegates acquiring a sound knowledge of the anatomy of the nose and the paranasal sinuses, understanding the indications and techniques and learning to avoid complications of endoscopic sinus surgery.

 
Objectives
The surgeon enrolled in this course should, upon completion, be able to:
Understand the detailed anatomy of the nose and paranasal sinuses
Interpret the CT scan of the sinuses in a systematic manner
Understand the radiological anatomy of the paranasal sinuses
Understand the basic requirements for endoscopic sinus surgery
Understand the operation theatre set-up
Perform basic sinus surgery procedures
Understand uses of the instruments and correct handling of the endoscopes
Understand the principles of advanced techniques
Perform advanced techniques with experience
     
Lectures
Using interactive multimedia presentations the morning sessions of the course will discuss:
Detailed anatomy of the nose and paranasal sinuses
Step-by-step dissection of the lateral nasal wall as relevant to the endoscopic sinus surgeon to complement the participant's understanding of endoscopic anatomy
Technique for systematic interpretation of the CT scans of the paranasal sinuses to assist the delegates in understanding the radiological anatomy
Pathophysiology of sinusitis, polyps and fungal sinusitis
Indications, preoperative preparation, postoperative care for endoscopic sinus surgery
Basic principles of endoscopic sinus surgery
Surgery of the frontal recess, sphenoid sinus, orbit and skullbase
Digitized video clips of intraoperative situations and solutions
Safety in endoscopic sinus surgery
Complications and their management
 
Cadaver Dissection

The afternoon sessions on both days will be for hands-on cadaver dissection. Dissection of the lateral nasal wall and endoscopic dissection will be demonstrated. Fresh frozen cadaver specimens, endoscopes, dissection instruments and video monitors will be provided.
