Types of Fellowships / Clinical Attachments

The Fellowship / Clinical Attachment Programmes at Singapore General Hospital (SGH) offer foreign doctors short-term attachments to undergo clinical training in more than 20 clinical departments. These programmes provide a comprehensive range of medical, surgical and clinical support specialty training.

Each department offers training in one or more subspecialties.  List of subspecialties and types of services can be obtained from the departmental webpages in the hospital website

The main objective of these attachment programmes is for candidates to gain exposure in the Singapore healthcare industry and/ or learn specific clinical skills. Successful completion of attachments proves experience gained but not competency achieved.  The attachments do not imply any recognition or acceptance for registration with any local or overseas medical council/ examination board/ medical association, unless otherwise specified by the respective authority.  



The SGH Postgraduate Medical Institute (SGH-PGMI) administers the following types of attachment programmes to suit the candidates’ individual needs.

Fellowship Attachment (Clinical Fellow)
  • Hands-on practice (training duration maximum 12 months)
  • Attachment of longer duration will be reviewed on a case-by-case basis 
  • Sponsorship available
  • Eligibility criteria :
  • SGH-PGMI administrative fee may be applicable
  • SGH training fee may be applicable
























Clinical Attachment (Clinical Observer)
















Clinical Attachment (Observer)
  • Observer (training duration maximum 4 weeks)
  • Self-funding only
  • Eligibility criteria :
  • SGH-PGMI administrative fee may be applicable
  • SGH training fee may be applicable















NOTES :

1. SMC = Singapore Medical Council
2. MOM = Ministry of Manpower
3. The types of training (hands-on or observer) follows the SMC regulations for the different categories of registration
4. For Fellowship attachments, candidates can apply for sponsorship administered by SGH-PGMI.  Training duration must be 6 months.  12-month sponsorship is only available for attachment with Departments of Anaesthesia and Pain Management.  Sponsored candidates may receive monthly stipends (from SGD 1000), fee waivers, etc subject to the terms of sponsorship.
5. Self-funding refers to candidates' own source of funding (not administered by SGH-PGMI).  The source may be employers, ministries, associations or even the candidate himself/herself.  Candidates are advised to confirm the funding before applying for an attachment programme.
